A bit more about me.
(Essentially a bunch of stuff about who and what sort of a creature I am to help you decide if I’m the one for you.)
Weddings are such incredible occasions whether they’re big, small, formal, casual, groovy, stylish, or simple. Whatever your plans, the main thing I always want to get across to everyone for their wedding is that it’s YOUR day and because of that, I encourage couples to consider everything that might make a difference (within the realms of reasonable budgets, obvs). And one of the things that can have a big impact is the person running the show – your celebrant.
Your celebrant is someone who can have a huge positive (hopefully) influence on your day, so making sure they’re the right one for you is a super important part of planning for perfection. I encourage people to speak to more than one celebrant because I’m a terrible salesperson but also because I want my couples to be certain that I’m the one for them.
So, with that in mind, here’s some bits and pieces about me and who I am to give you an idea of whether I could be the one you’re looking for.
I could talk (or write) all day so here’s the main points before I waffle on too much: I’m from Perth, I’m married to my favourite human, I’m a celebrant, a comedian, a teacher and my wife and I have a dog who brings us more joy than I ever thought possible. That’s the tip of the iceberg and if you want a little more insight then please, read bravely on into the waffle!
Husband
I was born and raised in a happy little family of four in Willetton, Perth. I did all of the regular school and then studied to be a teacher at UWA. Then when I was 21 and stumbling aimlessly through life, I went travelling on my own through South East Asia. On an island off the coast of Cambodia, I met a British girl who I got along with like no one I’d ever met before. Her name was Ruth and at the end of that year, I moved to England to be closer to her. After a few years in England, we made the decision to move back to Perth and build a life over here.
We were together for ten years before we got married and our wedding day was the best day of my life for so many reasons. It was the thought that we (Ruth especially) put into planning the day, it was being surrounded by almost everyone we love in the world, it was being lucky enough to be head over heels in love with each other, and it was in large part because of our celebrant – Dilhari (find her website here) – made it so.
Celebrant
Seeing and experiencing what Dilhari did for us and feeling the effect it had on our day and really, our lives leading up to the wedding, I knew I wanted to be able to do the same for others. By some strange twist of fate, and only weeks after our wedding, I was lucky enough to dip my toes into the world of celebrancy when our close friends asked me to conduct their Australian wedding (they’d already been legally married in England and wanted an unofficial ceremony for their Aussie pals). I got to preparing, writing, and performing the ceremony and loved every minute I spent on it. Not long after, I signed up for the course with The Celebrant Institute (who I would highly recommend if you’re interested in doing the course as well - you can find all the info you need here), studied to become a marriage celebrant and now here I am. Meeting awesome new people and having the honour of being a part of their big day.
Comedian/idiot
I’m also a stand-up comedian, performing on the Perth circuit every week. I’m lucky enough to have met, performed alongside, and become friends with, some of Perth’s absolute best comedians who bring me so much joy and teach me so much every time we talk. From a young age, I have loved finding ways to make people laugh and I’ve watched and obsessed over stand-up comedy since I was about 8 years old. I love the whole process. Writing jokes, performing, perfecting a set, and even failing and learning from those experiences. It’s part of what made me truly believe I could be a celebrant.
The weddings I perform will never be a comedy set – that’s not what it’s about. I firmly believe that writing and performing a great wedding ceremony is about finding the perfect balance of personalised humour and heartfelt messages.
Teacher
With all this going on, I am still a full-time teacher and I absolutely love that too. I’ve lived a lot of lives in education – I’ve been a high school science teacher in England, a relief teacher, a primary school phys ed teacher, a primary school Deputy Principal and now I’m a high school health and phys ed teacher. I love being able to go to work every day to do something I love, to spend time supporting students and making school a positive place for them. Like being a husband, a celebrant, and a comedian, I am truly passionate about teaching and I could talk about why I love it all day long but I’ll sum it up with this: I believe that kids deserve positive influences and if I can be that positive influence for even one of the many hundreds of students I’ve taught then it will be worth it.
Dogfather (not to be confused with Godfather)
Last but absolutely not least, and arguably the most important of all, Ruth and I have a dog – Albie (short for Albus Dumbledog because it’s important to have a formal name for your dog for legal reasons – don’t research that though). Albie is the absolute light of our lives. He’s a Kelpie x Border Collie, he’s very energetic, unbelievably handsome (I may be a little biased), and he’s incredibly clever (for a dog – he can’t do maths). He loves the beach, but hates the waves, he loves cold weather but hates the rain, and he keeps us happy, healthy, and vacuuming.
And that’s me I guess. I could also go on about my incredible friends, my love of baking sourdough bread, my overzealous passion for Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter but then we get rapidly into the realm of ‘OK, calm down Evan.’ And besides, if you got this far through reading about me, you deserve a beer. It’s on me. So get in touch and then it’s your turn to tell me all about you. What do you think?
